Sony Ericsson Xperia Arc Camera Features Shown Off on Video

Sony Ericsson’s product blog is back with more in-depth content regarding their latest “official” device, the Sony Ericsson Xperia Arc. This time, we’re given a tour of the device’s camera features. I’ll tell you right now: if you had any doubts about this device’s ability to take photos, then you’re in for a pleasent surprise. Not only is the quality above par, but the thing takes shots pretty damn fast: as soon as you press the shutter button, a picture is snapped and it’s immediately on to the next one. Sony’s impressing me with this phone more and more each day, but what do you guys think? [via EuroDroid]

PSA: Remember to Check Who’s Selling the Wares You Buy

It’s not the first time it’s happened, nor will it be the last time, but a reader of ours – Bart – brought to our attention a “developer” who’s been posting applications and games that he’s ripped from the internet and passing off as his own. The developer’s name is “jasminstory” and has several titles from GameLoft – such as NOVA HD and Oregon Trail HD – and the Mikandi adult entertainment app published.

What’s alarming is that he’s charging for the apps. While the games are offered cheaper than what GameLoft offers them for, it’s a slimy move and we urge anyone and everyone to stay away. Always be sure to check who you’re downloading your apps from, and if you aren’t sure, do a bit of research. We condemn piracy at any degree – which is why I questioned even shedding light on this injustice.

But my hope is that we can come together as a morally correct group of Android fans and flag these applications as malicious and illegal so Google can find them and take them down. Be a good sport and help us out! (Search “jasminstory” in the market and get flagging.)

Crytek: Xbox-exclusive Kingdoms will push 360 'to its limits'

Yerli told us in August last year that Kingdoms was around 20 percent complete and that it'll be "nothing like" God of War, while a Crytek Budapest job advert for a senior game designer on the Kingdoms team says applicants will need to "love accessible combat systems that empower players to do awesome actions".

While he wouldn't comment on the nature of the game, Yerli told us that the developer wants Kingdoms to max out Xbox 360's capabilities.

"... I think when we put Crysis 2 out we will show a level that is, multiplatform-wise, maxing out, but we will look into with Microsoft how Kingdoms can push the Xbox 360 110 percent, to its limits.

"When you're spending a multimillion budget only on the Xbox 360, that team will be able to crank out the last two or three percent left in the console. But I think that two or three percent will make the difference potentially between day and night that you cannot afford if you go multiplatform."

Later in the interview, away from the subject of Kingdoms, Yerli told us: "Kinect games are currently very casual, mainstream focused and designed to expand the market, but within two or three years it may be that Kinect plays home to triple-A productions."

Like Kingdoms?

"I don't know," Yerli said with a laugh. "Maybe, maybe not."

Lag-free Wii on PSP episode II: Mario Kart strikes back

It looks like our favorite PSP Fanboy, Obiwan222222, is up to his old tricks once again, and his latest video shows that he has finally eliminated the lag problem that plagued his first attempt to play Wii on a PSP four years ago. Using a Wii emulator on a PC, some custom firmware, and a program called PSPDisplay, he has managed to stream video and sound to his PSP Go in real time. He also mapped the Wii controls (Wiimote waving excluded, we presume) to the handheld to complete the full Wii-on-PSP gameplaying experience. TiVo Premiere App for iPad review

Searching on the TiVo Premier App for iPad

We're not sure what it is about the home theater, but one screen just isn't enough. So we've tried for years to find another screen suitable to join our HDTV to enhance our viewing pleasure, but everything comes up short. The latest in the long line of touch screen remotes, tablet PCs, PDAs and smart phones is the iPad. Of course this device isn't exactly designed to be a home theater device, so a little software is necessary to make it suitable. The latest attempt at said software is from TiVo which is designed to be a companion app for the TiVo Premier. It doesn't let you stream video from your TiVo to your iPad, but it does have a few tricks we think you might find more useful, so go ahead and click on through to find out what those are.

So there you are sitting, on your couch with your favorite person, watching your favorite shows and when you wonder, where do I know that guest star from? You grab your iPad stuffed between the cushions of your couch and launch the TiVo Premier App, which syncs over WiFi and opens automatically to the current show. You browse a bit and discover every single show the actor in question has ever been in and can quickly schedule future recordings featuring him without ever interrupting the others in the room. The app is good for more than just avoiding a few internet searches on your laptop though. You can also use it as a remote and even to search your TiVo for new shows without resorting to the on-screen keyboard. The idea is a great one and honestly TiVo's attempt is one of the best we've seen.

One of TiVo's biggest wins for this app is the gesture controls. They are completely optional and include an easily-accessible cheat sheet to help you learn or remember how to use 'em. Ultimately, it succeeds where many other touch screen remotes fail by making it easy to control the action on your HDTV without looking at the remote. Fast forward, skip, navigation, all the basics are there and implemented in a way that makes sense. You don't have to use the gestures if you don't want to, but one we thing you will want to use is the touch screen scrub bar. We really enjoyed being able to slide a scrub bar with our finger to find just the spot we were looking for, and this one one of the things the touch screen remote can truly do better than its hard button cousin. The other thing it clearly does better is search and browse. Some really like the TiVo Slide Remote, which is nice if you want to drop the extra cash on it, but having the full-screen keyboard available for searching is very convenient.

One thing we couldn't search for, though, was a TV channel. Not a big deal for fans of dramas and sitcoms, but sports fans will need to figure out which channel their team is on some other way since the iPad app will only let you find future events. Speaking of search, it isn't fast; in fact, it's nowhere near as fast as search is on the TiVo itself, but as a plus the results are delivered more clearly and can quickly be turned into a WishList recording or lead to browsing and discovering of new content.

It's very obvious that TiVo was trying to build on its Discovery Bar in its iPad app and for the most part it's a success. You can quickly get lost and forget where you started because you become engrossed in the content. You can start with a show, actor, or whatever and quickly find yourself seven degrees in any direction, including a Netflix or Amazon VOD selection. We really appreciate the new way to find a show we'd like, but sadly the traditional approach is a bit neglected. The TiVo Live Guide is great, but it isn't perfect, and it's not a complete replacement for the old fashioned grid guide, which is completely omitted from the app. This combined with the lag in the population of the guide, makes it a bit of a drag to use. You can filter out the channels you don't receive or only show your favorites though, and while you can easily go straight to any time you'd like, there's no shortcuts to prime time, the time when new shows usually come on. Speaking of time, when you do choose to jump into the future and Explore the actors etc, when you go back to the guide, you leave the future and return to the here and now, which isn't what we'd expect.

Besides being a great way to discover new content and control the TiVo from the same device, our favorite feature is being able to manage our ToDo List and Season Pass priorities without preoccupying the TV with something other than HD content. You can drag and drop the shows into any priority you'd like -- it stil takes forever to commit, but at least you can watch TV while it does it now -- and quickly / simply cancel recordings or clean up recorded shows you'll never watch. The day-to-day maintenance is the best we've experienced on a TiVo, and the only time we've ever been close is in the old TiVoWebPlus days, many years ago.

All that being said, the conflict resolution when scheduling new recordings is exactly the same as it is on the TiVo, and that's not a good thing. With the touch screen interface, it seems TiVo could find a better way to make hard decisions than just asking you simple yes or no questions. This isn't the only time we thought to ourselves, "there must be a better way," with the other being while watching sports and looking for an easy way to jump around to different games. Controlling the dual-live buffers is exactly the same as the physical remote, which is a shame since it is kinda hidden there and its just a big missed opportunity. We guess what we're saying is that we wish the thought that went into enhancing viewing of regular TV, also went into the viewing of sports programming.

While we're complaining, we might as well get the biggest gripe off our chest. We've had connection problems from the very beginning, and while the latest version of the app is better, it never could find our TiVo the first time we've launched it. A quick out-and-back-in usually does the trick, but even when it does find it, there's nothing fast about the process. It isn't a total exercise in patience, but what's worse is the app doesn't resume when you use fast app switching. You can see from the video that the re-launch time isn't unbearable, but TiVo most certainly has some work left to do in this area. Our final gripe is that, unlike the typical TiVo remote, you can't control your TV's power and volume. Now, obviously the iPad doesn't have an IR emitter and that isn't TiVo's fault, but we know TiVo knows a thing or two about IR blasters and would love to see the app leverage an IR blaster or IP control in the future to cut down on the back and forth between the old school remote and the iPad.

Wrap-up

After all the good times and bad times, we must say that the TiVo Premiere App for iPad is a great couch companion. It adds value beyond just replacing the traditional remote, without sacrificing much. Other than a few functions, you can completely throw away the original remote and have a single point of contact between you and your content. Sure, it's a bit slow at times, but even with the wait times, it can still accomplish many tasks quicker than you can via the traditional TiVo user interface. The bottom line is it's the best iPad App for controlling home theater gear that we've ever used, and it totally shows that TiVo "gets" what we mean when we say we want a couch companion. It's far from perfect -- no content streaming, for example -- but for a free app, it's a no-brainer to download for TiVo Premier owners and maybe even the final straw that breaks the inhibitions of those waiting for a reason to upgrade.

iPad 2 cases surface, rekindle SD card slot fire and add a pinch of mystery with topside cutout

There's usually as much fun to be had before an Apple product launch as there is after, and this upcoming iPad 2 device is no exception. The latest scuttlebutt it has succumbed to comes courtesy of some cases that have cropped up in China -- AppleInsider and MIC Gadget have independently found iPad 2 shells that feature nearly identical cutouts -- with the resulting allegations pointing toward a rear-facing camera, an SD card slot, and perhaps even a Mini DisplayPort receptacle. Our own sources have confirmed the former two, but the latter, a miniaturized video output already featured in MacBooks, is a new development and less of a certainty. Then again, looking at the size of the hole leaves few alternative options (and a USB slot is extremely unlikely), so we're willing to believe that a Mini DisplayPort will be an inclusion Apple makes for the sake of offering choice -- even if it prefers you to send your video streams over an untethered AirPlay connection.

Moneual DSPC puts a monitor on your computer case, welcomes your widgets

Moneual DSPC puts a monitor on your computer case, welcomes your widgets
CES is a big place, way bigger than your first apartment, so hopefully you'll forgive us for missing the Moneual Lab DSPC on the show floor. That stands for Dual Screen PC, a case sporting a decidedly tall display that could make for a useful desktop extension despite subscribing to no aspect ratios heretofore known by man. Unfortunately no specs were provided for resolution or size, but we could see throwing your image editor's toolbox over there, maybe a chat window, or just loading it up with widgets as in this picture. However, with an anticipated cost of $1,500, we're thinking you could instead buy a properly large second monitor -- and a new desk to put it on.

Acer building Sandy Bridge tablets for Android, will use them to 'phase out' netbooks

You'd be forgiven for expecting that the dual-core Tegra 2 that swept all before it at CES would be the king of tablet processors for a good while, but Acer is already plotting ways to overthrow it. Admittedly, Acer is kind of cheating by jumping into x86 land and snatching some unspecified Intel Sandy Bridge silicon, but are you really going to complain about getting multi-core grunt under the hood of your well-lubricated Android machine? An official from the company has promised two to three new tablets, sized at either 7 or 10 inches diagonally, for the first half of this year -- a tasty morsel of information, which he garnishes with the forecast that netbooks will eventually be phased out in favor of such touchy-feely slate devices. If you can fit a full second-gen Core CPU inside a tablet, why the heck not?

Is Microsoft About To Let Kinect Play Nice With Windows?

Is Microsoft About To Let Kinect Play Nice With Windows?

With hackers showing the world what Kinect is truly capable of, it was only a matter of time before Microsoft decided to release its own, official PC support for the Xbox 360's motion sensing camera.

PC gossip site WinRumors reckons that Microsoft "is currently preparing an official Kinect SDK and driver support for Windows based PCs", meaning that instead of having to mess around with code to get Kinect working on your PC, you'd just need to download the official drivers and go from there.

It's also claimed that Microsoft will be promoting the use of Kinect on PC with third parties, which will hopefully not just lead to loads of exciting new ways to interact with your computer, but to official Kinect games on the PC as well.

Portal's Creators Want To Give You Free Games

Portal's Creators Want To Give You Free Games

If you play Portal 2 on PS3, you can play with people on a PC. Neat! And to make sure as many people as possible are doing just that, the PS3 version of the game will include the PC version.

All players have to do once they get the game is link their PlayStation Network and Steam accounts. Once that's done, they'll have a Steam Play (so, PC and/or Mac) version of the game ready to download in their library list.

This cross-platform play even extends to giving PS3 users the ability to chat to PC gamers, and vice-versa. Oh, and PS3 users can even save their game in the Steam Cloud, meaning Valve has them tucked away in their servers in case something ever goes horribly wrong with your PS3.

That's a whole lot of "firsts" for both Steam, the PC multiplayer service of choice, and Sony's PlayStation Network. Not to mention a free copy of the game you can, for example, take with you on a laptop when you're not on your couch with the PS3.

And if all this works, and works well, let us welcome out glorious cross-platform future with open arms!

ModNation Racers for-pay cheat unlocks everything, coming tomorrow

The latest of what we like to call "lazy gamer" cheats -- downloadable unlocks that open up entire games, for a price -- is actually inbound from Sony for ModNation Racers. It's called the "Career Unlock All Key" and, for $3 tomorrow on the PlayStation Store, evidently does what its name suggests.

Given the ultra-creative nature of the game, we can't really knock the idea of having access to all of the stickers, karts, tracks, themes and other various parts on the disc (and those added by DLC, if you've already bought it). Then again, if you've already sunk $60 into the retail release and more into DLC, you'd think the least Sony could do is throw in some seat covers a code.

Sounds like Chime is headed for US PSN, too

Originally developed for Xbox Live Arcade as the first of OneBigGame's for-charity titles, music-based puzzler Chime is one step closer to release on PS3 via PlayStation Network. Already rated by classification boards in Australia and Germany, the game has now received an "E" rating from the ESRB.

Now this PS3 version of the game just needs to be, y'know, announced. (Hopefully with Portal's "Still Alive" included.)

Portal 2 on PS3 features cross-platform chat, multiplayer and a free Steam copy

Valve's announced that the PS3 version of Portal 2 will be quite chummy with its PC and Mac cousins come April 20, revealing full cross-platform compatibility: PS3 users can chat with Steam users, play multiplayer with them and even partake in cloud-based storage. The disparity between the PS3 and PC/Mac versions appears to be about non-existent now.

Additionally, those who pick up the PS3 game are ensured a free voucher for the Steam Play version of the game, should they link their PSN and Steam accounts. "We hope to expand upon the foundation being laid in Portal 2 with more Steam features and functionality in DLC and future content releases," said Valve's Gabe Newell.

Head past the break for the full press release.

League of Legends admin fired after streaming misuse of power

Riot Games has fired a customer service representative who live-streamed his misuse of administrative powers during a League of Legends bout. VE3D reports the employee verbally abused a player and inappropriately banned him. Riot Games' community relations director Steve Mescon announced today the employee is no longer with the company and it will be reviewing internal policy and training procedures to "prevent such incidents from happening in the future."

Another incident for the employee-related community relations nightmare file.

Fan-made Chrono Trigger sequel finds release

Square Enix raised some ire by sending out a cease and desist against the release of a fan-made Chrono Trigger sequel, but the game has found its way out to the Internet anyway. Reddit user buu700 has posted what he says is a final build of Crimson Echoes, the sequel made by fans reusing the original game's sprites. He also leaked a game called Flames of Eternity a couple of weeks back, supposedly a fork of the fanmade title, which "diverged fairly heavily from what Crimson Echoes was intended to be."

Fans who've played the game say the characters are a little different than they remember (main character Crono, silent in the original, speaks, and a few of the dialects aren't quite right). But those hungry for some of the old 16-bit RPG magic will have to take what they can get -- at least until Squeenix's lawyers hear about it.

The Super Smash Bros. Mod That Looks Backward

The Super Smash Bros. Mod That Looks Backward

Fans of Nintendo's Super Smash Bros. series of fighting games love to tinker, hacking new characters, stages and moves into the game. A soon-to-be-released demo for a Super Smash Bros. Brawl mod named "Project M" takes a different approach.

The mod's creators want to Super Smash Bros. Brawl for the Wii to take a step back, devolving it into Super Smash Bros. Melee for the GameCube. That doesn't mean that they're looking to create a "Melee clone," however. According to the mod's description, its something of de-make that takes a single generation step back, with a long list of changes designed to make Brawl play more like its GameCube predecessor.

Project M is, according to the community team making it, "designed to add rich, technical gameplay to a balanced cast of characters while additionally enhancing the speed of play" and "add in new, universal features to the entire cast to add technical variety to all characters."

Masahiro Sakurai, the game designer of Super Smash Bros., says he believes Melee was the "sharpest" game of the series.

Project M's creators are planning to release a demo version of their creation soon. In the meantime, are there any Super Smash Bros. mods you think are deserving of more attention?

More Disney Epic Mickey easter eggs than you can handle

Though Epic Mickey is pretty obviously rife with Disney lore, there are likely some easter eggs you missed. Maybe the game's camera refused to point at them (sorry, couldn't help ourselves) or maybe you just aren't versed enough in Disneyology to spot them all.

Fear not, as Topless Robot has a list of 10 of the biggest you may not have picked up on. Our favorite? ESRB reveals Ar Tonelico Qoga's 'suggestive moans and comments'

The third (and supposedly final) Ar Tonelico game, Ar Tonelico Qoga: Knell of Ar Ciel, will arrive on PS3 in March. The ESRB's content description for Gust's RPG gives us a bit of a preview of what to expect: shame, mostly.

'Some power moves cause female characters' clothes to vanish in layers,' the ratings board says. 'The characters are often depicted holding (covering) their breasts, wearing only underwear, or standing behind strips of light that obscure their genitals.' Other described scenes feature 'male characters [encouraging] a woman to strip' and a scene in which a male character removes a magical crystal from a female, accompanied by what the ESRB calls 'suggestive moans and comments.' How suggestive? 'Aoto's putting his hand inside Soma,' for example, and 'Fumble around every inch inside of her . . . you will find what you're looking for . . . !'

Though you might have already guessed, Ar Tonelico Qoga is rated M for eMbarrassing Mature.

After a month of intense competition, the 3DMark 11 Overclocking Challenge jointly organized by Futuremark and MSI came to a successful conclusion on January 4, 2011. The high level of interest in the competition, which attracted top overclockers from around the world with Elmor from Sweden eventually emerging on top, was evidenced by the more than 110,000 submissions and 600,000 views. Liquid nitrogen cooling was used to overclock the core/memory frequency of a MSI N480GTX Lighting to an extreme of 1375/5200 MHz, setting a new record of P9277 for a single-core graphics card and the highest benchmark registered since 3DMark 11 was released!

The benchmark surpassed the previous record of P9213 set by a GeForce GTX 580, showing that superior MSI design and high-quality components are needed to truly unleash the full power of graphics cards! In the Best Performance vs. Cost category, TeamChina from China took the top spot with a score of 34.43 using the GeForce GTX 460, leaving no doubt that the GeForce GTX 460 graphics card's success is due to consumers recognizing its unbeatable performance vs. cost ratio.
