The CIA is Watching You Tweet

…The CIA maintains a social-media tracking center operated out of an nondescript building in a Virginia industrial park. The intelligence analysts at the agency’s Open Source Center, who other agents refer to as “vengeful librarians,” are tasked with sifting through millions of tweets, Facebook messages, online chat logs, and other public data on the World Wide Web to glean insights into the collective moods of regions or groups abroad.

In a mere five years, microblogging/messaging service Twitter has gone from being written off as a flash in the pan to being a central part of the Internet today. In their infographic, Masahable takes a look back at some of the major milestones for the service, and also reveals some surprising facts about its user base. For instance, 30% of Twitter’s users apparently make over $100,000 a year, so maybe there’s hope for @qwikster yet.

Facebook and Twitter Team Up

Facebook was quick to respond to the flight of people over to Google+ when it launched, with a new feature that specifically targets what groups can see your status updates. Now the social media giant has teamed up with Twitter in a move to block out Google’s attempt at getting a foothold in the market.
It’s not a super new feature, as people with “fan pages” have been able to link their Facebook and Twitter accounts in the past. Now you can update your personal Facebook and Twitter pages at the same time.
To set it up, head over to facebook.com/twitter and link your profile page to your twitter account.

Twitter makes homeless in NY, superstars on social media

When Rosemary, Willy and Robert met at the Barn, the internship program at BBH New York, the only intention was to do something good.
They didn’t have a big budget, but an ambition to make it big – so they turned to social media. That’s how “Underheard” came into being.

Underheard in New York is an initiative to help homeless residents in New York City speak for themselves.
Danny, Derrick, Albert and Carlos were given each with their own mobile phone, a month of unlimited text messaging and a Twitter account. They’ve found their voices by texting their thoughts, feelings and actions to Twitter. The mission is to use their social media presence to create real interaction and make them a part of the global community. In other words, get to know them as individuals.
The power of social media is so huge, that Danny, Derrick, Albert and Carlos are today superstars on Twitter. They’re followed by thousands of people who ask them questions, interact and pretty much help them with their lives today.

Happy Birthday, Twitter!

Today is the fifth anniversary of the first non-automated Tweet ever sent over the new Twitter social networking site. On March 21st, 2006, Twitter founder Jack Dorsey sent this Tweet:

Exciting, huh? Dorsey had been working on what would become Twitter for five years by then -it was first called Twttr.

As the story goes, Dorsey elaborated on his idea during a casual Mexican lunch at that San Francisco hotbed of startup DNA, South Park.

Coding began March 13, and eight days later a machine-generated tweet was issued from Dorsey’s account (No. 12):

While this is widely considered the world’s first tweet, Dorsey is adamant that “inviting co-workers” (his Odeo colleagues) was the first, and so is Twitter.

openSUSE 11.4 still going strong

One week ago, we released openSUSE 11.4 introducing many exciting new features. The result was, as we wrote on Friday: a big splash. The 100.000 downloads in the first 24 hours and large numbers of blogs, articles and reviews all over the world were certainly impressive! So for today, 1 week later, we set out to find out how the stats look right now. Did we keep the momentum going?

On the numbers

6 days after our previous report, downloads on bittorrent moved to well over 36.000 downloads from the 12.000 in the first 24 hours. Still over 900 people are seeding. Meanwhile, the total number of downloads on the download page has exceeded the 300.000 downloads now.

Breaking the numbers down a little, we can see what images you are choosing. With over 113.000 downloads, the i586 DVD iso is the most popular, followed by 83.000 downloads for the 64 bit DVD. The live CD’s are going fast as well, with over 37.000 for the KDE (32 & 64 bit) and 31.000 for the GNOME one. Quite a few users are even opting for the networked installation CDs, with about 16.000 downloads as well.

After announcing they had openSUSE 11.4 support from day 1, the SUSE studio team let us know last week that they had 1000 appliances build with openSUSE 11.4 in 24 hours. Well, since then, thousands more have been made! On the release day, traffic to the SUSE Studio website spiked by 62%. Right now, SUSE Studio image building still takes significantly longer than usual due to the continued increase in traffic… They also let us know that it is now possible to automatically update your current appliance to openSUSE 11.4 if you want.

Reviews and articles

There are many more reviews now on the web. We have not spend much time updating our in-the-press page as there is just too much. Just in Spain, for example, 10 major sites published reviews and notices – that is not including blogs and many smaller sites…

We do want to point to one particular review, the one by The Linux Action show. Both gentlemen doing this are usually not huge openSUSE fans so we greatly appreciate their glowing review of 11.4! And, gents, count on us taking care of the thing you were missing: innovation and fancy stuff! There are several great initiatives upcoming as we reported in this article about 2010 and surely, more will come.

Of course Novell supported our release with a press announcement, mentioning some of our major new features. Chairman and CEO of Attachmate, Jeff Hawn, conveyed congratulations on the release of openSUSE 11.4 on behalf of his company.

Social media stats

Our Social Media guru Chuck ‘pup’ Payne reports some fantastic participation on our various social networking channels. The top five countries participating in our social pages were the USA, Indonesia (who have created their own page!), Germany, India, and Italy.
Change Your Profile Pix

As a ‘last moment idea’, Chuck posted on the openSUSE spage and group that users might like to change their pix to the Geeko character that Carlos had had created. A fun way to celebrate and promote the release. This was very successful, with 20% of users changing their profile pictures to our geeky, suit-wearing lizard!

Interactions on Facebook

The stats for the official openSUSE Facebook Page were up 148%. Weekly and Monthly Active User are on the rise. There was a bit of dip on March 12 (Saturday) after the release – must have been all those machines busy downloading and installing! Page Likes are up 122% with postfeed back up 238%. The highest was the day of the release. Post views went up 118% with post feed back being up 441%.

Twitter

Chuck set up a feed so that posts would be sent to Twitter. It’s hard to get exact statistics for Twitter, but over on the day we had a lot of tweets flying. We started mainly twitting and re-tweeting or news. Chuck sent direct tweets to Linux Magazine, Linux Pro Magazine, Linux Journal, which helped because they return retweeted and then created they own tweets with links to they websites. We really appreciated the support from our colleagues in the media!

Delete Location Information History On Twitter

We have talked about the dangers of publicly available location information before (see Creepy! Track Michael Arrington, Or Anyone Else, Via Geolocation for pointers). A simply example would be a Tweet from your holiday location, which could invite burglars or social engineering attacks. But there is more to it than the direct danger, people can use the location information to create a movement profile, a stalker’s heaven.

Location based information are not added to Twitter messages by default. A user needs to enable this option in the Twitter settings. Users who have enabled the option may, at some point, want to delete location information from their account to prevent tracking and an invasion of their privacy.

This guide explains how to enable location information on Twitter, how to disable the feature again and how to delete all location information from past tweets.

You first need to visit the Twitter homepage to sign in to your account. Once signed in click the account username in the upper right corner of the screen and select Settings from the available options. You can also open the account settings directly by following this link (displays a sign in form if you are not logged in, displays the account settings otherwise)

Locate the Tweet Location setting under the Account tab. Location information are added to Twitter automatically if the setting “Add location to your tweets” is activated.

Ever had something you wanted to share (“fireworks!”, “party!”, “ice cream truck!”, or “quicksand…”) that would be better with a location? By turning on this feature, you can include location information like neighborhood, town, or exact point when you tweet.

When you tweet with a location, Twitter stores that location. You can switch location on/off before each tweet and always have the option to delete your location history.

Location information are only added to tweets if the device or application supports those information. When enabled location information are added below tweets of the user.

Tweets won’t include location information from that moment on if the service is disabled by the user.

Locate the “delete all location information” link on the same page to delete previous location information.

Twitter displays a popup that needs to be confirmed. Please note that it may take up to 30 minutes before the information are removed from the database and the tweets.

Because if I don’t write this somebody else will: After blazing a colorful trail through some obscure radio show, The Today Show, Good Morning America, TMZ, CNN and so on, media obsession of the moment Charlie Sheen has brought his antics to Twitter. It looks like Sheen was just set up with a “Verified” account at @CharlieSheen.

While the account does seem pretty boring and lacks an image currently, I’m guessing that it was set up as more of a counter measure to prevent parody accounts like the one below (which sneakily uses a capital “I” instead of an “L” in Charlie) from continuing to, um, parody unchallenged.

It’s testament to the times we live in that Sheen or someone on behalf of Sheen would consider Twitter an important enough arena to pin down. I mean, it’s not like he’s worried about his Myspace profile.

In any case, “Followed” — By me and everybody else in the world.

Update: It took the account less than an hour to amass 100K followers, all awaiting what promises to be a very heavily covered first tweet.

Update 2: And he’s tweeted! And I called it.

Also: His bio? “Unemployed Winner….,” referring to his now signature catchphrase.

It’s easy to fall into the trap of spending an hour reading and writing tweets before you realize you just meant to log on to your email and respond to your boss. Twitter is an addictive social information machine, and we wouldn’t be surprised if “Twitter addiction” becomes a verifiable condition. Think you might have a Twitter obsession? 1. You keep your Twitter client on your smartphone running by your bed, just so you can be notified of any @mentions while you sleep.

Charlie Sheen Sets Guinness World Record for Hitting 1 Million Twitter Followers

The ghoulishness of the media obsession with Charlie Sheen has been well-documented, and we apologize for not covering every crazy thing he says about tiger blood with more diligence, but a Guinness Record in social media is a Guinness Record in social media, and so congrats, @charliesheen, for winning Twitter.

Guinness has verified that Sheen’s is the fastest account ever to reach one million followers, though the Guinness Book of World Records did not previously contain a record for that category. Sheen joined Twitter on the afternoon of March 1st, was almost immediately verified thanks to the intervention of celebrity endorsement broker Ad.ly, and within 25 hours and 17 minutes, he hit one million followers. As of posting, Sheen has 1,256,636 followers and is insane.
