Rumor: AMD says the next-gen Xbox will have graphics like Avatar
AMD: Xbox 720 graphics will look like Avatar Technology company AMD, who supplied the graphics hardware for the Xbox 360, claims that the next Xbox will be capable of the level of graphical detail seen in James Cameron's movie Avatar. Even on PC, that kind of technology just isn't here yet, but AMD claims the Xbox 720 will launch with it. While AMD would not confirm they were actually working on the 360's successor, director of ISV relationships at AMD, Neal Robison, stated that gamers have a lot to excited about. Robison also mentioned that the A.I. and physics capabilities of the next-gen hardware will allow for every pedestrian in a game such as Grand Theft Auto or Saints Row to have a totally individual mentality, meaning when you shoot a gun or run someone over they don't all just do the same thing. Avatar graphics in real-time games? Not going to happen this coming gen (next-gen). Not at least until next-next gen around 2020+ with Xbox4 & PS5, *if* even then.
Heh, saying that Xbox3 will have graphics like Avatar is like saying the original Xbox will have graphics like Toy Story. We aren't even at Toy Story quality yet, not by a longshot.

AMD FirePro 2270 and V5800 DVI Professional Graphics Cards Launched
AMD today introduced the AMD FirePro 2270 and ATI FirePro V5800 DVI professional graphics cards. The first one is an entry-level card while the latter is a heavy duty video card. According to AMD, both are designed for professionals in the medical, financial, design and engineering fields who require the ability to view and interact with multiple applications simultaneously.
As AMD’s only low-profile, passively cooled, dual-display, triple set support solution graphics card, the AMD FirePro 2270 (pictured above) delivers multi-display capabilities for increased efficiency, longevity and compatibility. Additionally, the AMD FirePro 2270 enables efficient multitasking across multiple applications, including graphics intensive applications, helping to prevent system slowdowns. As for I/O connectivity it provides DisplayPort, DVI and VGA. It is priced at $149.
On the other hand the ATI FirePro V5800 DVI (pictured below) delivers professionals the graphics performance needed to drive two high-resolution dual link DVI displays while offering users the ability to stretch one image or application across both screens for expanded field of view and enhanced productivity. Support for DVI, the most common digital interface, makes setting up dual-display configurations easier than ever. The ATI FirePro V5800 DVI professional graphics delivers a full 30-bit display pipeline to enable increased color reproduction and superb visual fidelity and supports packed pixel mode to support dual 5MP medical displays. It is priced at $469.

The video card is powered by two 40nm 'Cayman' GPU. Other features include 3072 stream processors, a total of 4GB memory, dual-link DVI, four mini DisplaPort 1.2, and support for 4-GPU CrossFireX.
We also know that the GPU provides up to 6.0 TFLOPS of single precision and 1.5 TFLOPS of double precision, 307.2 GB/s bandwidth, and TDP of 300W.
Its 'unique' cooling system is quite similar to that of the GeForce GTX 295 single-PCB.
The AMD Radeon HD 6990 is expected to be released later this quarter.

AMD ships 1.3 million Fusion APUs, 35 million DirectX 11 GPUs, says it has 'momentum'
Hey, this interim CEO thing doesn't seem to be too hard at all. Thomas Seifert, the temporary solution to the problem created by Dirk Meyer's departure from AMD's top spot, has had a pretty comfy ride reporting the company's latest quarterly results. The pecuniary numbers themselves ($1.65b revenue, $375m net income) were tame and unexciting, but Seifert got to make a pair of juicy milestone announcements. Firstly, on the mobile and ever-so-efficient front, he noted that 1.3 million Fusion APUs (Accelerated Processing Units) have been shipped to partners since AMD started deliveries in November, and secondly, in terms of discrete graphics chips, he disclosed that the Radeon HD 5000 and HD 6000 series DirectX 11 GPUs have surpassed the 35 million units shipped mark. To give you some perspective on what that means, sales of Nintendo's bestselling Wii console are hovering somewhere around the same figure. So yes, AMD, your wagon has momentum, but shouldn't it have a driver too?
Microsoft reveals new version of Windows compatible with ARM, other SoC architectures
Today at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, Microsoft demonstrated an upcoming version of its Windows operating system that will extend the OS’ reach to a new breed of tablet computers. The currently unnamed Windows OS, which has been dubbed “Windows 8″ by many, is fully compatible with popular System on a Chip (SoC) architectures that current versions of Microsoft’s flagship OS will not work with. ARM-based tablets will be accessible to the new Windows OS, which is the news many have been waiting to see confirmed, though Microsoft is not expected to release this new version of Windows until next year at the soonest. The obvious upshot here is that these cards will cost less than their fully equipped brethren. Sapphire's above mentioned model is the only one we've found, but so far it doesn't appear anything other than the amount of RAM has changed; clockspeeds and other features still match up.
While Sapphire appears to be leading the charge, German website HT4U.net says other vendors will soon follow, offering both HD 6950 and 6970 cards less memory.
