Crytek knows graphics, and it definitely knows tech. Their own series, Crysis, has been munching up PCs for the past few years, and, as we all know, Crysis 2 is currently sitting on top of both the PS3 and 360′s graphical offerings.
They want to take their visuals to the next level, but for that to be a reality they need the next gen systems to come around, and be vastly improved when they do. R&D principal graphics engineer Tiago Sousa has made a call for the next systems to offer as much as eight times the RAM currently available on PS3 and 360. He told Digital Foundry: “My finger-pointing at Microsoft/Sony would really be on the memory side. It’s way too low, and the biggest crippling factor from a visual perspective.”
So, given that 360 and PS3 currently hold 512MB of RAM, how much would Sousa like? “I would really like to see next-gen console platforms with a minimum of 8GB.”
Ouch; tall order. We’re still a long ways off from any new Sony or Microsoft systems. Maybe they’ll live up to Crytek’s hopes.
